Stumped by tree questions?

Maybe! It will depend on your council and any planning overlays (e.g., VPO, ESO) or Significant/Exceptional Tree listings. From September 2025, a new clause regarding canopy trees has been introduced to all planning schemes in Victoria. This clause, Clause 52.37, requires a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree.
A qualified arborist, like the team at MTS, can look at your property and overlays to determine whether your tree can be removed without a permit, or whether it is deemed a canopy tree. We’ll help you with any necessary reports and permits needed to remove a canopy tree and complete the tree removal works once permission is granted.

Things can go wrong quickly when you’re removing trees. Damage to property and risk to personal safety should be top of mind for anyone undertaking this challenge. With that in mind, we recommend seeking an arborist at AQF Level 3 or higher for pruning and removals. The team at MTS is accredited, licensed, and insured — so you have peace of mind you’re getting a qualified arborist for every job we tackle.

If your tree’s unwell, it’ll usually tell you. Keep an eye out for these red flags:
- Leaf discolouration (yellowing, bronzing) or premature leaf drop
- Dieback in the tips/branches (dead twigs, receding canopy)
- Bark splitting or sap/ooze from cracks and wounds
- Fungal bodies (mushrooms/brackets) on the trunk, roots or at the base
- Borers – tiny pinholes, sawdust (frass), or chewing damage
- Canopy thinning – patchy crown, smaller-than-normal leaves
- Root plate movement – soil heaving, fresh lean, gaps opening at the base
If you suspect a serious pathogen (e.g. Armillaria root rot), don’t guess — get a professional diagnosis.
What to do next?
MTS offers tree health inspections Melbourne-wide. We’ll assess the tree properly: on-site assessment, samples if needed, and a clear plan. If it’s a safety issue (sudden lean, cracking noises, roots lifting), treat it as urgent.
Need treatment?
We handle tree disease treatment in Melbourne — from targeted pruning to habitat-safe remediation. Give us a bell and we’ll get your tree back on track.

Don’t wait for the wind to do your pruning. Before storm season, remove deadwood, shorten overlong limbs, and keep branches clear of roofs, gutters and solar. Maintain a mulched root zone, avoid trenching or compaction, and keep access/egress and public areas unobstructed. Clear gutters and drains. Never touch powerlines. After a blow, treat fresh leans, cracks or heaved soil as unsafe. Best tip? Talk to a qualified arborist: they’ll assess the tree, handle pruning, and make it safe — properly, professionally.
